چکیده

To the Editor—We congratulate Cheung et al1 for providing local data on the accuracy of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of non-toxic thyroid nodules. In 2003, we retrospectively analysed the results of 192 FNAC of thyroid nodules performed in Queen Elizabeth Hospital between January and June 2001. Forty-three of those patients underwent thyroidectomy and a comparison of the histopathological findings with the FNAC results yielded false-positive and false-negative rates of 0% and 5% respectively, similar to Cheung et al’s series. As in their series, the retrospective nature of our analysis precluded prospective monitoring of thyroid nodule growth. The false negative rate could be an underestimation, since our mean follow-up period was only 24 months after FNAC.

False negatives in thyroid cytology: impact of large nodule size and follicular variant of papillary carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is well established in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules. However, false-negative rates for malignancy of 3% to 10% are reported. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of nodule size and follicular variant of papillary carcinoma (FVPTC) on false-negative FNA rates in thyroid nodules and on malignancy rates in no...

Factors That Affect the False-Negative Outcomes of Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy in Thyroid Nodules

Background. The purpose of this study was to assess the factors that affect the false-negative outcomes of fine-needle aspiration biopsies (FNABs) in thyroid nodules. Methods. Thyroid nodules that underwent FNAB and surgery between August 2005 and January 2012 were analyzed. FNABs were taken from the suspicious nodules regardless of nodule size. Results. Nodules were analyzed in 2 different gro...

Correlation of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology with Histopathology in the Diagnosis of Solitary Thyroid Nodule

Background. Fine needle aspiration cytology is considered the gold standard diagnostic test for the diagnosis of thyroid nodules. Fine needle aspiration cytology is a cost effective procedure that provides specific diagnosis rapidly with minimal complications. Based on the cytology findings, patients can be followed in cases of benign diagnosis and subjected to surgery in cases of malignant dia...

Diagnostic Accuracy of Frozen Section in Comparison With Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology in Thyroid Lesions – A Prospective Study

Background and Objectives: Thyroid gland because of its superficial location is amenable to direct physical examination. Clinical assessment of thyroid lesions by means of physical examination, thyroid scans and ultrasonography is not completely reliable. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is the most cost-effective, safe and an initial diagnostic test in the pre-operative evaluation of thy...
